Mariposa Grove Reopens To Pedestrians Only
Wednesday, 05 April
Yosemite National Park officials report the Mariposa Grove reopens only to pedestrians today.
Hikers will be able to walk on the Mariposa Grove Road, which is plowed to the Mariposa Grove Arrival Area, where many sequoias are visible. However, the Mariposa Grove beyond the end of the plowed road is very snowy. The road remains closed to all bicycles and vehicles.
The hike to the Mariposa Grove is four miles round trip with 500 feet of elevation change. The road is very icy; traction devices for your shoes will be useful.
Due to road damage, we are unable to service the vault toilets at the arrival area. Restrooms are available at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza (near South Entrance) and a vault toilet it available at the picnic area about 1.3 miles from the welcome plaza.

Yosemite National Park officials report the Mariposa Grove reopens only to pedestrians today.

Both roads were damaged in recent storms and have one-lane sections controlled by traffic lights. Watch for damaged road shoulders and for heavy equipment on the roads.
Badger Pass Road remains closed until further notice.

Cancelling Boil Water Notice
The Boil Water Order has officially been cancelled and the water system has been repaired.
What happened?
On March 15, the Wawona water system experienced a significant loss of water. This event drained one of the two water system pressure zones which serves most of the residential area. The snow and general weather conditions made locating this leak challenging. Before this leak could be located the water storage tanks were emptied. This caused the pressure in parts of the water distribution system to lower to zero. As a precautionary measure a Boil Water Order was issued to protect the public health.
What have we done?
Following the loss of pressure, diagnostic measures were implemented that helped eliminate functional areas allowing the water system operators to narrow the search pattern and eventually locate and isolate the leak. The system has reestablished zone pressure by raising the water storage levels. As a precautionary measure, chlorine disinfection levels have been elevated temporarily, and clean bacteriological sampling have verified the system is in working order. Flushing has also been executed to remove any air that may have entered the distribution system.
What can you do?
Residents are advised to "flush" their water following the lifting of a boil order to clear plumbing of older water and potentially entrained air. Flushing your household and building water lines includes interior and exterior faucets, showers, water, and ice dispensers.
Exterior Faucets:Flushing from the exterior of the residence where your water line first connects for about 15 minutes. This will help to ensure that adequate levels of chlorine are moved through the system and any potential air is removed before it enters the residence.
Cold Water Faucets:Run tap water until the water feels cold, one minute or more, before drinking, brushing teeth, or using for food preparation. If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run the cold water first.
Hot Water Faucets:To clear hot-water pipes and water heater of older water, flush the hot water line for a minimum of 15 minutes for a typical household 40-gallon hot-water tank, 30 minutes for an 80-gallon hot water tank or larger. Hot water is then ok to use for washing hands, and for hand-washing of dishes, pots and pans, etc.
Dishwashers:
After flushing hot water pipes and water heater, run dishwasher empty one time.
Humidifiers:
Discard any water used in humidifiers, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), oral, medical, or health care devices, and rinse the device with clean water.
Food and Baby Formula:
Discard baby formula and other foods prepared with water on the day or days of the boil order. If unsure of the dates, contact your water department.
Refrigerator Water-Dispensing Machine:
Water dispensers from refrigerators should be flushed at least one quart of water. If unsure of your dispenser's capacity, refer to manufacturer specifications.
Ice Cubes:
Automatic ice dispensers should be emptied of ice made during the boil water order and run through a 24-hour cycle, discarding the ice to assure purging of the icemaker water supply line. For medical, dental, and food-service establishments, please refer to the guidance from the Department of Public Health.

Wawona Reopening Date Now Moved to Monday, March 27 (maybe)
All,
I know you are all anxiously awaiting the re-opening of the southern end of Yosemite, as are we. We understand and are sympathetic to your need to get back to business. We are doing everything we can to be able to safely open Wawona and Highway 41 to visitors. As you are likely aware, we have had several partial road failures between the South Entrance and Chinquapin, which has forced the road to one lane, all of which are on corners with little to no sight distance. Adding visitors to the traffic volume will increase the possibility of collisions in these areas, so mitigations must be put in place. Those mitigations will be temporary traffic lights that will allow for automated traffic management in those areas and significantly reduce the hazards. With the coming storm on Tuesday and Wednesday, then continued rain, we feel it will be prudent to wait through the weekend, when we will have a reasonable confidence that more roadway won't collapse, we can keep up with the ongoing storms, and get the traffic lights and other mitigations in place. Additionally, the current water supply issue in Wawona should not be a factor in the decision to open. Many of you are on private wells, and those that aren't could manage your properties as appropriate if the water supply issue persists.
Please plan on the area remaining closed at least through Sunday, March 26. We greatly appreciate your patience and hope to get past all of this very soon.
Please see the attached Superintendent's Closure Order as a reminder of the details of the ongoing closure. The Wawona Road gate closure will continue to be in effect from 7 PM to 7 AM, except for emergency situations.

How to Safely Recreate While Park Recovery Efforts Continue
March 18 - With the park’s reopening this morning of Yosemite Valley and Hetch Hetchy, here are few pointers and reminders on how to safely recreate while park recovery efforts continue.
• Yosemite Valley remains on day-use only from sunrise to sunset until March 20 with limited services found only in Yosemite Village. No reservation is required to enter the park.
• On March 20, the open areas of the park return to 24-hour access with the return of some lodging and other facilities, conditions permitting. Hetch Hetchy maintains open hours from 8 am to 5 pm.
• Currently, Yosemite Valley can only be accessed by the El Portal Road (Highway 140), and tire chains may be required to be in your possession. Call 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) for current road conditions. Please drive carefully as debris may be in the roadway.
• Many paved pedestrian paths are plowed, but all hiking trails are covered in snow. Waterproof boots and traction devices are advisable on the paved paths which may be icy. Hiking on snow-covered trails is not recommended.
• Avoid river and creeks, which are running high and have snowbanks that may collapse.
• Do not walk in roadways as the roads are narrow with high snowbanks.
• Do not enter closed areas.

Yosemite National Park Will Restore Minimal Public Access Starting Saturday, March 18, 2023.
SNO, 3/16 - Yosemite Valley will be open from sunrise to sunset starting Saturday, March 18, 2023, with very limited services available. The only access to Yosemite Valley will be via Highway 140 and El Portal Road, with a short detour in El Portal.
Hetch Hetchy will reopen from 8 am to 5 pm daily but will only be accessed via Highway 120 west of Yosemite and Evergreen Road. All other roads and areas of the park, including Big Oak Flat and Wawona Roads, will remain closed.
While several miles of paved pedestrian paths in Yosemite Valley are plowed, all hiking trails are covered in snow. Wear waterproof boots and traction devices; even plowed paths can be icy. Hiking on snow-covered trails is not recommended.
Winter weather is again in the forecast next week. However, conditions permitting, Yosemite Valley will open 24 hours daily starting Monday, March 20, with limited overnight lodging. Campgrounds are still buried in snow and will not open immediately.
Visitors should be prepared for the possibility of road closures and tire chain requirements. Please call 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1) to check road conditions.
The park has been closed since February 25 due to a series of storms that damaged roads and other facilities.
Since February 21, when the series of storms started, Yosemite Valley has received over 21 inches of liquid precipitation, and Tuolumne Meadows has received over 15 feet of new snow.
The park has documented 22 rockslides, debris flows, and other slope failures along park roads during this time, most of which have been mitigated.
Other services and areas of the park will reopen as park recovery efforts continue.

Several items are being considered when making this decision and the big two are:
- Water. As you are aware, the NPS water system developed a leak which resulted in a boil-water order and possible disruption of water to the vast majority of the community (basically anything on NPS water east of the Water Treatment Plant). While this does not affect many of the Redwoods cabins, it does affect many others. Today they were able to identify one major point of damage and have begun repairs which seems to be helping the situation. It will take at least 48 additional hours once those repairs are complete to chemically treat and test the water. Only at that point will the boil-water order be lifted. To allow time for these repairs and bringing that portion of the water plant back online, we need a few days.
- Wawona Road Damage. Wawona Road has suffered washouts, minor mudslides, and minor rockslides in several areas. There are currently two areas reduced to one lane and one more area that will be reduced to one-lane between Wawona and Wawona Tunnel. There is one area that will be reduced to one lane between Wawona and South Entrance. This is largely due to undercutting of the roadway and concerns about asphalt integrity, especially with increased traffic. There will be a significant delay in long-term repair to these areas and some locations are on blind curves. To ensure safe travel conditions for visitors, traffic control equipment (think temporary stoplights) will need to be placed. This will take a few days to procure equipment and establish safe travel conditions for visitors.
- If you are driving around Wawona or on Wawona Road, please travel slowly. Line of sight is reduced by snowbanks throughout Wawona. Workers are present all along Wawona Road as they make temporary repairs, clear ditches and culverts, and perform other work. Consider everything a work zone.
- Gates are open 7am - 7pm. There is no access overnight. The gates are locked, so please plan ahead and have an alternative plan if you encounter a locked gate or will not make the 7pm closure. And a gentle reminder: vandalism of any gate (or anything else!) is not appropriate.
- We are anticipating more rain and snow next week. This is the time to make repairs and assessments, clear your gutters, and otherwise prepare your home for more rainwater. We are allowing workers and contractors (with some proof of a job) in from 7am - 7pm.
- Conditions around town are extremely muddy and/or slushy and it will likely worsen with another 2-4 inches of rain predicted. We expect chain control to be required along Wawona Road next week as well.

BOIL WATER NOTICE
Boil Your Water Before Drinking or Food Preparation to Avoid IllnessDue to the recent water leak, which started on March 15, the State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water, and the Wawona Water System are advising residents of Wawona to only use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution to avoid stomach or intestinal illness. The affected areas include: All users whose homes are higher in elevation than the Wawona Water Treatment Plant. Areas unaffected include the hotel and facilities lower in elevation than the Wawona Water Treatment Plant. If you are unsure of you elevation, follow the boil water notice.
We will inform you when tests show that water is safe to drink, and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate resolving the problem and providing potable water restoration when the leak is located and repaired.

Optional: Potable water is available at the following locations: Container can be filled at the NPS maintenance yard on Wawona District Circle.
Please bring a clean water container (5 gallons maximum capacity).

Do not drink the water without boiling it first
- Boil all water for one (1) minute (rolling boil).
- Let water cool before drinking.
- Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.
- Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
If you are unable to boil your water:
Household unscented liquid bleach
- For clear water, use 8 drops (1/8 tsp.) of bleach for 1 gallon of water. For cloudy water, filter through a clean cloth and use 16 drops (1/4 tsp.) of bleach for 1 gallon of water.
- Mix well. Allow to stand for 30 minutes before using.
- Water may taste or smell like chlorine. This means disinfection has occurred.

Wawona Losing Water Pressure In The Water Distribution System
March 15- EMERGING SITUATION: A new issue emerged today in Wawona where we are losing water pressure in the water distribution system. If the source of the leak is not found and fixed, this could result in the loss of water service to most of Wawona. Crews are searching for the leak, and we are coordinating with the state for the procedures we will need to follow if this is not found and patched. Utilities is working hard to resolve this issue. Please note, this only affects properties that are tied to the NPS freshwater system. An Everbridge alert will be issued if residents need to take action.

Club Express will send out a welcome email to all of you, with information about the website. It will include a username for you and a password. You will need those for the member login. Remember them, since this is the only time you will receive them. If you forget, you can contact “[email protected]” with your email.
Your username and password will always be the same from year to year. However, the password will be turned off if you do not pay dues each year. We have set it up so that the renewal date will be March 31st each year. If you pay dues before then, your password will stay “on”. If you pay dues after March 31, your password will be turned off until you pay your dues that year. So all members who paid 2022 dues will have access to the membership portion of the WAPPOA website until March 31, 2023. Dues paid for 2023 will give members access through March 31, 2024.

The HOME page of the website has information about WAPPOA and Wawona. There is a menu bar with links to other pages - Event calendar, History, Archive, WAPPOA Initiatives, WTPAC, and Links to other areas related to Wawona. (The Home page and links are available to the public)
When you want to see upcoming meetings and events – go to the Event Calendar page, click on “Switch to List view”, scroll to the right and click on “future”.
Under Archive, you can click on “Community Newsletters” for copies of the Wawona Community News letters that are sent out quarterly from the library. I will be uploading more when I get them scanned. There is also an area for History, which will include stories from Wawona. We will be uploading things as we have time.
