Message from WAPOA regarding the dead tree and debris removal
We have talked to the representative from PG&E’s Vegetation Management program coordinating the work in Wawona. At present, they have inspected all the properties in Wawona, and cut down the trees they had flagged. They will not remove all of these fallen logs. The property has to “qualify” and there are several factors that determine whether they will remove the logs from your property or not. They must be within 50 feet of a permanent livable structure, and they should be at least 6 feet in length. They will also take logs that may be a safety risk, such as ones that might roll into a house or onto a road. They will do a physical inspection and if the property qualifies, they will notify the owner – usually by phone or email (which they get from public records). The owner then will have to sign off on a form for the removal.
They have done the inspections in most of Wawona and reached out to owners who qualify. If you have not heard from them and want to talk to PG&E about removal, you should call the hot line at PG&E, which is 1-800-743-5000. You may have to hold 10-15 minutes, but once you reach them, they will give you a case number. They have to respond to you within 7 days.
If you do not qualify, it is your responsibility to get the logs removed.
Also – they will not be removing the “debris” – the bark and branches. Those are the homeowners’ responsibility. The bark cannot be chipped and they don’t have the capability for collecting and removing it, so the owners have to do it.
They will do inspections twice a year, since more trees will continue to die. They will look at everyone’s property each time and you may qualify then. You can call the hotline anytime and get a case number.
