Tioga Road Temporarily Closed
November 5, 2020 - Yosemite National Parks officials report the Tioga Road (continuation of Highway 120 through the park) and Glacier Point Road will temporarily close on Thursday, November 5, at 6:00 P.M. in anticipation of snow.
We will evaluate conditions on Monday for possible reopening. (Based on the forecast, we don't expect this to result in a closure for the winter.)
If you are visiting this weekend, expect rainy and/or snowy weather, and that means it's time to pack your tire chains (https://go.nps.gov/chains).
Check current road conditions by calling 209/372-0200 (then 1, 1).

Glacier Point Road Project - 2022 and 2023
Glacier Point Road will be closed to all traffic in 2022 to rehabilitate and improve the road. The only access to Glacier Point will be via the Four Mile, Panorama, and Pohono Trails, all of which are strenuous hikes. There will be 30-minute delays in 2023.
The existing roadway was completed in 1936, replacing the original wagon road built in 1882. This area attracts high volumes of traffic year-round because it provides access to Bridalveil Creek Campground, Glacier Point, the Badger Pass Ski Area, and numerous trailheads.

In Remembrance of Brian D. Jones: May 28, 1959 – September 30, 2020
Posted by: SNO Staff
Brian Jones was a man of generous spirit, who was always available to share his skills, knowledge, talents and time. He was the kind of person who would share whatever he had with others, no matter what the personal sacrifice.
Brian passed on Sept. 30 after a yearlong fight with renal cancer. Brian’s passing is a great loss to the mountain community and a devastating loss to his colleagues, friends and most importantly his beloved wife, family and pets. His family and friends meant everything to him.
Brian grew up in Rosemead, California, and graduated from Rosemead High School in 1977. He married the love of his life, Rebecca, in 1988 and they were together until he took his last breath. He and Rebecca moved to Coarsegold in 2007 and he truly found his home here in the mountains.
Brian made his career in construction, and was considered a “Master Carpenter.” His top priority was achieving a quality product and making his customers happy. He had been nominated to Architectural Digest, and was in other articles and magazines due to the quality of his work. He had the skills and knowledge to make almost anything work, and his projects were praised by those whom he served. Brian had a way of making people feel calm and at ease and that “it’s OK, everything is going to work out.” He loved sharing his knowledge regarding anything he felt passionately about, and he was a mentor to many people.
Brian’s interests included fishing, camping in the Sierras, his ranch, working on his rose garden, spending time with his family, friends and colleagues and the mountain community. He was a private pilot and loved flying airplanes. We can all close our eyes and envision him at peace, up in the peaceful heavens.
Brian was the hardest working man anyone will ever know. He loved laughter and life and just wanted everyone to be happy and at peace. He never put himself first in any situation. All that knew him, know how fortunate they were to have had him in their lives.
Go rest high on that mountain Brian, be at peace, and know your work here on earth is finally done.
There will be a “Celebration of Life” memorial service for Brian Jones on November 14, 2020, at 12:00 p.m. It will be a potluck affair held on Brian’s property 42744 Rd. 415, in Coarsegold.
If you have any questions, please contact 559-760-6818. Thank you.

National Park Service announces Cicely Muldoon as Yosemite National Park’s new superintendent
WASHINGTON – The National Park Service has selected Cicely Muldoon, a 35-year veteran of the National Park Service, as the new permanent superintendent of Yosemite National Park. Muldoon has been serving as the acting superintendent since January.
“Cicely is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding and compassionate leaders across the National Park Service. I’m thrilled to have someone with Cicely’s proven and respected track record leading one of America's most iconic and complex national parks,” said Margaret Everson, Counselor to the Secretary, exercising the delegated authority of the National Park Service Director. “Cicely’s track record of building strong relationships with park partners, local communities and elected officials will be invaluable as the National Park Service and Yosemite implement the Great American Outdoors Act.”
In her new role, Muldoon will oversee the 750,000-acre park and its 1,200 employees. Home to granite peaks, domes and waterfalls that overlook broad meadows, wildflowers and groves of ancient giant sequoias, Yosemite attracts more than four million visitors annually, who spend nearly half a billion dollars in nearby communities supporting over 6,000 local jobs.
“A childhood visit to Yosemite introduced me to national parks. It captured my imagination and my heart then, and still does. It’s the honor of my career to join the outstanding team of employees and partners who care for and love Yosemite as much as I do,” said Muldoon.
Prior to her acting position at Yosemite, Muldoon served for nearly 10 years as the superintendent at Point Reyes National Seashore— one of the most ecologically rich areas in the United States. At Point Reyes, Muldoon led historic investments and improvements to park infrastructure and built and strengthened relationships with local communities and elected officials to find commonsense solutions to managing the park’s complex array of resources, from designated wilderness to historic dairy farms.
Before her appointment at Point Reyes, Muldoon served for five years as a NPS deputy regional director based in San Francisco where she oversaw partnerships, visitor and resource protection, interpretation and education, wildland and structural fire and safety programs across the region. She also provided direct oversight of 10 parks including Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Lake Mead. Before serving as a regional official, Muldoon was the superintendent at Pinnacles National Park and earlier at San Juan Island National Historical Park.
A California native, Muldoon holds a Bachelor of Science in zoology from the University of California, Davis. She officially begins her new role on November 8.

Wawona Road Delays
Starting next Monday, October 19, 2020 crews will begin some additional drainage repairs and shoulder stabilization on the Wawona Road in the former Ferguson Fire burn area (Between the Rostrum and Chinquapin.). As part of these repairs there will be single lane traffic control with up to 30-minute delays. The work will continue thru the end of the calendar year.
Then beginning, Thursday, October 29, 2020 crews will begin working on a slide stabilization located approximately 1-mile north of the Wawona Campground. As part of this stabilization there will be two, 4-hour closures each day with a 1-hour opening period between the two, 4-hour closures. These closures will extend for 3-weeks and they will be from 8AM to Noon and from 1PM to 5PM each work day thru November 18, 2020. The Wawona Road will be closed at the Chilnualna Falls Road on the south end and Henness Ridge Drive on the north end of the closure area. The reason for these 4-hour closures is for safety to prevent vehicles from being hit by slide material or blast rock as the crews work to remove the loose rocks and boulders from this active slide area.

Monday thru Friday
30 Minute Delays = 10/19/20 thru 10/28/20 and 11/19/20 thru 12/31/20
4 Hour Closures = 10/29/20 thru 11/18/20 (8AM to Noon & 1PM to 5PM)

Fire Update October 9-15, 2020
There are multiple fires burning in Yosemite National Park. Each fire is burning in fire adapted ecosystems in Wilderness. There are trail closures in effect. All fires may be visible from Tioga Road (Highway 120 through Yosemite National Park), Glacier Point, and high country vistas. Smoke from each fire is settling locally at night and in the morning then rising and dispersing to the north and northeast in the early afternoon. Park managers are working with the local Air Quality Districts to monitor smoke impacts to the park and local communities. Smoke from ongoing regional fires continue to impact the area. Please heed all signed trail closures and follow all traffic controls in areas you will be visiting.
Blue Jay Fire
Location: Yosemite Creek drainage south of the 10 Lakes trail at 9,000 feet elevation.
Discovery Date: July 24, 2020
Size: 6,334 acres
Containment: 50%
Strategy: Confine and Contain
Cause: Lightning
Activity is moderate because of weather and available fuels in the area. Primary direction of growth is to the north and northeast from Tioga Road at McSwain Summit. There may be some smoke impacts to Tioga Road (Highway 120 through Yosemite National Park) during the day.
